What Is A Laser Thermometer?

A laser thermometer is needed when you want to take the exact temperature of a surface without having to touch it.

There are different types of laser thermometers for use according to your specific need.  These include:
  • Laser cooking thermometer/Laser culinary thermometer
  • Automotive/Home use thermometer
  • Health/personal care thermometer
These laser thermometers all work using infrared technology.

Thermofocus BV-1500 "5 in 1" Family Fever Thermometer

Thermofocus is the most advanced, clinically accurate and totally safe device to measure body temperature on the market today.

Convenient and easy to use, Thermofocus uses internationally patented, state-of-the-art Infrared technology.

Indeed, it is the first and only FDA registered non-contact medical thermometer.

The device enables the temperature of adults and children to be taken without touching the skin, simply by moving the thermometer close to the forehead at the distance indicated by the device.

With Thermofocus, there is no need to place the thermometer into any part of your or your baby's body.  A sleeping baby (or patient) will not be awakened when Thermofocus is used nor will they be caused any discomfort by the device if they are awake.

This Non-Contact, Totally Hygienic device helps avoid the spread of contact-transferred illnesses from one family member to another or from one patient to another. Measures in Fahrenheit or Centigrade. Recalls previous 9 readings from memory. Extra added features: also measures baby bottle temperature, bath water, food, ambient room temperatures or other surface temperatures. Manufacturer's 2 year warranty.

5.0 out of 5 stars Thermofocus themometer
By K. Mras (California, USA)
I have the original model and this one. I am a school nurse and am using both of these in my office and just love the ease and quick accurate readings I get using them. The instructions say to use it on the forhead and that the forehead needs to be dry or it will reflect the laser light. In darkness you just hold down the laser light button until it is one circle on the forehead (dry) and let go and get the temp. Use the memory button to get your reading once you are in a lit room. It reads low when kids have not eaten breakfast or have drank something cold. It can be used on the carotid artery in the neck area also. I have a backup B&D digital mouth thermometer to get a second reading if I have any questions. This might be needed once or twice a day max. Love this as there is no spit to be touching and my severe disable kids are not bothered with it. I have used this for 6 hours a day for the last 10 months and all I had to do was change the battery. Love love love this product.

FeverWatch Professional Clinical Non-contact Infrared Thermometer - Forehead

The FeverWatch non-contact infrared (IR) clinical thermometer provides a simple, expedient, and accurate way for initial fever screenings by taking the surface temperature of areas on the face such as the forehead or tear ducts. It obtains the body temperature reading with 0.3 degree accuracy in less than 1 second through a click.

The FeverWatch IR thermometer features an intuitive guidance system to secure positioning and confirm accurate readings.

Temperatures (Fahrenheit or Celsius) are displayed on a huge back-lit LCD screen for easier reading even in total darkness. Adjustable audio alarm will alert you if the temperature is too high.

Since there is no contamination risk, one can immediately start again to scan the temperature of other family members or individuals without having to disinfect or changing the tip. FeverWatch was designed specifically for forehead temperature detection from a 1"-4" (5-15cm) distance with an 89-109 F(32.0-43.0C) temperature range.

Unlike other IR thermometers that only measure surface temperature, FeverWatch is clinically calibrated to convert the forehead temperature reading(external surface) into internal body temperature which is one of the most important vital signs for human being. It can also store 32 temperature readings for future reference. The bright back-lit LCD screen displays readings even in darkness.

A sleeping baby or patient will not be disturbed by the FeverWatch as it is used nor will it cause any discomfort if they are awake. For public health authorities, it provides a simple, quick, Non-contact, and non-invasive way to perform preliminary mass-screening for H1N1 fever (swine flu) infection symptoms (body temperatures above 98.6 degrees Fahrenheit or 37 degrees Celsius).

FeverWatchTM can take over 100,000 readings on a single set of 2 AA batteries (included). With its rugged, impact and water resistant design, FeverWatchTM is able to take over 3,000,000 measurements in the product's lifetime.

5.0 out of 5 stars first week at work RN
By ba (Palm Desert, CA)
As an RN working at two hospitals, I have tried this unit for a week, so far it has been great and the other nurses and aids I have shown it to, most of them are going to buy one. It is so easy and fast to use I feel I am really saving time, as for accuracy it is better than any oral thermometer I have ever used, the real mean average body temp is 98.2 not 98.6 so this one reads closer to the correct temp. I picked up a mild fever with this unit that the hospitals $450.00 thermometer could not pick up due to the client not being able to close his mouth all the way. Every hospital should use these to save time and money. This one works on all ages unlike thermofocus. The only negatives are that for me it is too big to comfortably put in your pocket and feels like the typical Chinese plastic that if dropped may destroy it. Have not dropped it yet so I am not sure how tough it really is.

You can even use the detector to diagnose engine misfires or check your refrigerator and freezer settings.

Black & Decker TLD100 Thermal Leak Detector

5.0 out of 5 stars This meter is a dandy, especially if you're tech-nerd
By G. Stelzenmuller
Even if you are an unfortunate non-tech "regular" person. Man, what fun to aim and read this dandy little hand-held temperature detector. This device reads the temperature difference between a "reference point" and wherever else it is pointed around the house (probably only from the inside!). The trick here is to see where temperatures are somewhat lower than the reference point. The reference point, by the way, should be some wall or surface that you suspect is kind of the "average" temperature of the house. This means that the home owner can more easily track down places where cold outdoor air could be leaking in, or where the insulation does not stop heat losses like they should. Leaks almost certainly will be the big heat loss killers (or heat gain into an air conditioned space inside in the summer).

Once leaks and losses are narrowed down, then a trip to the hardware store to get some caulk, weather stripping, and limited insulation for hopefully less than one hundred dollars will go a long way to spending less on heating and cooling.

A couple notes on this instrument:
- This can read temperature differences up to about 300 degrees Fahrenheit, so there is plenty of range. This can be important for finding dangerous HOT spots around the house, and having little to do with energy savings: heating or stove problems hidden from view, electrical shorts behind the wall, etc.
- You can set the infrared beam to indicate temperature differences of either 1 degree, 5 degrees, or 10 degrees, giving you a good choice of the sensitivity you are inspecting; and the differences are visual - a green spot for temperature within allowed limits, red spot for too hot, and blue spot for cold beyond the limited tested.
- Windows and transparent surfaces (and probably shiny surfaces) will not test well with the instrument. Not a big deal.

This tool is an excellent buy.

5.0 out of 5 stars The coolest gizmo you never knew you needed
By orangekay (San Francisco, CA)
I bought this to assist me in honing my chocolate tempering skills as regular candy thermometers are such an amazing pain to use, but it ended up improving my cooking even further by alerting me to the fact that the thermostat on my oven was consistently off by nearly 40 degrees. I've no doubt it will come in handy the next time I think I have a fever, find some faulty weatherstriping or suspect an electronic component of overheating, too. It's well-built, accurate and its UI does pretty much everything right by default. My one complaint is that you have to open up the battery compartment to move the tiny little dip switch from Fahrenheit to Celsius--I personally think a recessed bubble switch on the housing would have been a wiser choice.

5.0 out of 5 stars Good product --Great price

I bought it because of the low price & was surprised to find it works just as well as more expensive Fluke thermometers I've used in the past. It works quickly, has a good distance to spot ratio and it's priced just right. I've used it for everything from spot temp checks of computer equipment to checking my freezer & my ceiling insulation coverage. I would buy the same one again if it were lost or broken.
